Christmas Road Trip! Days 1-3

By Jenny | December 22, 2006

Well, for the first time in over ten years, we were able to visit out families in California for Christmas. And what a treat it was!

We had to unexpectedly change our plans from driving through the Rocky Mountains (major snowstorm!) to driving south through Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and on and on into California. We left later than we wanted to on that Wednesday, and drove through the late evening until shortly after midnight.

Thursday found us crossing states we had not crossed previously, and that was fun. Texas had just had an ice storm and the trees looked amazing! Each one (and I mean, every single tree we saw in Texas) was frozen, each branch shining brilliantly in the sun. It was very beautiful, and very, very, very flat. I thought Nebraska was flat. We have nothing on the Texas panhandle. Here are just a few photos, with one more attempt on my part to take a cool, Ken Walker type photo:

We arrived at our hotel late on Thursday night, and we were up and on the road early the next morning. Fairly uneventful, other than the children really got tired of being in the car. I know this sounds normal, but I just find it odd that they are fine until the last two or three hours of any given trip. We can drive for 12 hours and that happens, or we can drive for 6 hours and that happens. I remarked drily to Jode that it was a good thing we did not come over Donner Pass or else they would have renamed it after our family. We had a bit of snow in Arizona, as you can see, and then clear skies in Southern California!

We arrived at my parent’s place around 7:30 pm or so, and it was so great to see them. The children were thrilled, I was thrilled, my parents were thrilled, etc. I truly miss them so much.

Also, one other bonus to this season, I was given a satellite radio by my employer so that was a lot of fun to listen to. The children especially liked the old time radio.

More later!
