The Nebraska Equation

I have been asked the question, “WHY Nebraska??” quite a bit lately, so I thought I would start off our family blog by answering that question.
When I was in high school, I had a great math teacher. He really only had one problem: he had to teach me algebra. I was not good at algebra at all. I did not get the factoring. I did not get the equations. I did not get the percentages. I did not get the fractions. I did not like it here or there, I did not like it anywhere! I did not like it, Sam I Am! I did not like green eggs and ham…..
Sorry, I digress…Anyhow, I did not get it at all and spent many hours trying the patience of poor old Mr. Ostrander. He was a great teacher, and I actually pulled a decent grade. And, that has to do with Nebraska.
What I did not know then, is that all that learning equations had to do with our figuring out where we would live, in 2005, when our family hit a time of big decision making. So, here is the equation-
Jode’s school (with a good acceptance rate of master’s degree applicants) + low tuition rates for the master’s program + a children’s hospital(for William) + affordable cost of living + along the Route 80 corridor (to drive to California for family visits) + Starbucks (for my employment) + good housing prices(more house for the buck!) + places Jode can work part time (and still attend school) =Nebraska*8 + one cat + one very old hamster.
Do you see now? It all added up to Nebraska. We looked at other states (Pennsylvania, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana), but none of them gave us it all in one package.
So, my thanks to my algebra teacher. And now you know WHY Nebraska…
p.s. my apologies for anyone who might have come to this site thinking the title “The Nebraska Equation” was the latest Brad Pitt movie…
